Letter Regarding OPT OUT for the State Testing
A message from Pine Tree Elementary School:
March 22, 2018
Dear Parents and Guardians,
The school district is busy preparing for the upcoming testing season. The 2018 testing schedule for students in Grades 3-8 is as follows:
New York State Grades 3 English Language Arts (ELA) exam: April 10-11, 2018
New York State Grades 4 and 5 English Language Arts (ELA) exam: April 12-13, 2018
New York State Grades 3-5 Math exam: May 1-2, 2018
Students will once again be given as much time as they need to complete the tests and, with the exception of the third grade ELA exam, all students will be taking the traditional paper based test.
For the first time, third grade students will be taking the ELA assessment on the computer. The New York State Education Department has mandated that all elementary and middle school students take these assessments online by 2020, and Monroe-Woodbury is beginning to phase in computer based state assessments. Our students are familiar with computer based testing as they have taken other assessments online, such as the STAR assessment and NYS field tests.
The district is beginning with third grade since this is their first experience taking these particular exams. Additional information on NYSED computer based testing initiative, including what the assessment will look like, can be found at http://www.nysed.gov/edtech/computer-based-testing-cbt.
We believe state assessments provide valuable information about the performance of our school and district. In addition, these assessments help our younger students become familiar with standardized testing prior to the state mandated Regents exams, which are a graduation requirement.
Whether or not your child will be taking the tests should be a thoughtful family decision. If your children will not be taking the tests, we request that parents and guardians notify us by Friday, April 6. This will allow our building administrators time to plan ahead for room assignments, proctoring schedules and other logistical details. Once a request is received, a building administrator will be in contact to acknowledge receipt.
Please contact me if you have additional questions and concerns regarding the assessments and your child’s educational experience.
